Episode 1260 – We Need Radical Change Or Else…

The United States is getting a preview of what will happen here from the country of France.

A pair of has-been actors a screaming and cursing about Trump again, trying to encourage people to get out and vote.

And Donald Trump has been a busy bee.

This Is What Cowardice and Suicidal Empathy Get You

According to the Daily Wire:

French teenagers stormed back to the barricades Tuesday for a third round of their increasingly violent school revolt, and this time the grown-ups joined them.

Scuffles erupted between protesters and cops on the streets of Paris, and clashes flared in Lyon and Strasbourg as thousands of high schoolers once again blockaded their schools. Authorities braced for as many as 40,000 marchers to flood the capital.

The students now have reinforcements. A coalition of teachers’ unions, the hard-Left Confédération Générale du Travail (CGT) labor federation, the Socialist Party, and French Left-wing politician Jean-Luc Mélenchon’s La France Insoumise joined the students. A radical farmers’ union even urged its members to roll up to the blockades on their tractors.

The movement, which started over complaints about crumbling classrooms, packed schedules, and a shortage of teachers, has spiraled into riots.

Cops have made more than 6,000 arrests since September 28, and over 5,000 people, most of them minors, have been hauled into custody, according to France’s Interior Ministry. More than 700 police officers and nearly 100 school staffers have been hurt.

Protests have disrupted 589 schools and left at least 190 students injured. In the northern town of Lens, a 15-year-old lost his hand after picking up a police grenade.

Good Move!

According to the Daily Wire:

President Donald Trump has approved the execution of Fort Hood shooter Nidal Malik Hasan by a U.S. Army firing squad, a step toward what would be the first military execution of a U.S. service member in more than six decades, the Pentagon announced Monday night.

Hasan, an Arab-American and former Army psychiatrist, was convicted of killing 13 people and wounding 32 others in the November 2009 shooting at Fort Hood, Texas. Prosecutors said he shouted “Allahu Akbar” during the rampage.

Trump’s stamp of approval follows a pledge from Hegseth, who said in September that he was committed to carrying out Hasan’s death sentence.

This Is What They Wanted

According to the AP News:

President Donald Trump on Sunday tapped Jay Clayton, his director of national intelligence, to lead a new government task force on artificial intelligence.

Trump is calling it the “Super Intelligence Force,” because he has tried to rebrand AI as “super intelligence.” The announcement comes after Trump hosted top executives of AI companies at the White House last week and said they had signed a voluntary accord that would effectively self-police the development of the technology.

The task force will coordinate the federal effort “to ensure that America continues to lead the World in Super Intelligence, which many say is bigger than the Industrial Revolution, and the Internet, and will protect the interests, and improve the lives, of all Americans,” Trump in a post on social media Sunday.

The task force will reach out to consumers, public interest groups, religious organizations, critical infrastructure providers and AI companies, the Republican president said.

Others on the task force include the Federal Trade Commission’s chairman, Andrew Ferguson; Emil Michael, the Pentagon’s chief technology officer; and Scott Kupor, the director of the Office of Personnel Management.

The group will report to Trump and his chief of staff, Susie Wiles.

Who’d of Thunk It?

According to the California Post:

LA’s “mansion tax,” sold to Angelenos as a way to tax the rich and boost housing, has instead blocked the building of 9,100 homes, wiped out 16,650 full-time construction jobs and cost $452 million in revenue.

A damning new report says the tax, officially known as United to House LA, or ULA — has had a negative impact on the city’s high-end and multi-family real estate markets and collected less than half what it was expected to generate to tackle the city’s housing crisis.

The ULA was expected to raise about $900 million a year, or $2.7 billion over its first three years. Instead, it brought in about $1.2 billion.

The tax — which went into effect in April 2023 and was championed by socialist mayoral hopeful Councilwoman Nithya Raman — means if a property in LA sells for more than $5.4 million, the seller is taxed 4% of the price at closing. If it sells for more than $10.9 million, it increases to 5.5%.

Despite its nickname, LA’s “mansion tax” applies far beyond luxury homes. Apartment buildings, offices, warehouses and vacant land can all trigger the tax if they sell above the thresholds.

About 1,000 of the 9,100-plus new homes lost would have been affordable units — the very thing the tax was supposed to create — according to RAND corporation, a non-partisan, nonprofit research group.

Westside real estate broker Danny Brown told The California Post the tax was ”another disaster initiated by the incompetent socialists who run our city.”

“ULA has chopped the legs from under the residential and commercial real estate industry, which is one of the largest parts of our city’s economic engine,” Brown said.

Episode 1259 – I Hate To Say I Told You So, But…

Donald Trump has done something else that I cannot support. This leads me to worry that Conservatives have lost their way.

Gavin Newsom signs a bill into law that will further lead this country away from our founding principles.

And, I hate to say that I told you so, but, I told you so.

This Is A Bad Idea

According to AP News:

President Donald Trump is promising more payments to voters just ahead of the Nov. 3 midterm elections — this time, to more than 20 million seniors, giving them $90 each to help pay for Medicare premiums.

The announcement, made late Friday night by Trump on social media, comes after the president last month said about 1 million people would get rebate checks of $500 for Affordable Care Act premiums. He has also promised on the campaign trail to send every American adult $5,000 if Republicans retain control of the House and Senate in the midterm elections.

That pledge — which would require approval from Congress — would likely cost more than $1 trillion, adding to the deficit and worsening inflation.

Well, He Did It

According to the California Post:

California Gov. Gavin Newsom signed into law a bill that formally recognizes two Muslim holidays as state holidays on Sunday, making it the second state to formally recognize both holidays statewide.

California Assembly Bill 2017 officially added Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha to the list of state holidays, which would permit public schools and colleges to close and allow state employees to be eligible to observe the holidays.

However, schools and businesses will not be required to close on these days, and courts will be required to stay open.

This makes California the second state in the country, after Washington state, to pass statewide legislation recognizing the Muslim holidays.

Before signing AB 2017, Newsom had multiple bills on his desk that provided protections and exceptions for other religious observances, including Jewish holidays such as Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur.

I Told You So!

Four orders of Catholic nuns, joined by Catholic health-care organizations and the Diocese of Rockville Centre, sued New York officials in federal court over the state’s new Medical Aid in Dying Act. Their central claim is that the law’s counseling, referral, documentation, and accommodation requirements could force religious ministries to facilitate physician-assisted suicide in violation of their Catholic beliefs and federal constitutional/conscience protections.dioceseofscranton+1

The lawsuit

The plaintiffs include:

  • Carmelite Sisters for the Aged and Infirm
  • Dominican Sisters of Hawthorne
  • Missionary Sisters of St. Benedict
  • Little Sisters of the Poor
  • The Diocese of Rockville Centre and Bishop John O. Barres
  • Several Catholic health-care ministries, including Catholic Health

The suit was filed July 17 in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of New York. It names New York Attorney General Letitia James and state health officials—not Hochul personally—as defendants, although the challenge is to the law Hochul signed.san+1

What the law does

Hochul signed New York’s Medical Aid in Dying Act on February 6. It permits certain mentally capable, terminally ill adult New York residents—generally those expected to have six months or less to live—to request medication that they may self-administer to end their lives. A clinician can prescribe the medication but does not administer it.san+1

Hochul’s position is that participation is voluntary and that religious facilities can opt out.wfmd

Why the nuns object

The Catholic plaintiffs do not contend that they would have to directly prescribe or administer the drugs. Rather, they argue that the statute and related patient-information requirements may compel them to do things they consider participation, such as:

  • Counseling patients about assisted suicide.
  • Discussing eligibility or access to life-ending medication.
  • Making referrals or transfers to providers who participate.
  • Adopting policies or recordkeeping that support a patient’s pursuit of the procedure.
  • Permitting staff to assist patients in navigating the process within their facilities.san+1

They say those duties conflict with Catholic teaching, which regards euthanasia and physician-assisted suicide as morally impermissible. Their legal theories include the First Amendment’s Free Exercise Clause and federal health-care conscience protections.dioceseofscranton+1

Where it stands

A federal judge, U.S. District Judge Anne M. Naracci, issued temporary protection on July 30, preventing enforcement of the disputed provisions against the religious plaintiffs while the litigation proceeds. Reporting says the state agreed not to apply those requirements to the plaintiffs for the time being; that is not a final decision on the constitutionality of the law.san+1

So the short version is: this is a religious-liberty challenge to the institutional participation requirements surrounding assisted suicide—not a ruling that has struck down New York’s assisted-dying law statewide.
