Episode 1267 – Wokeness is Alive and Well!

Israeli elections are proving how messy parliamentary governments are.

Artificial Intelligence is making our children dumber and a professor at UC Berkley is changing his grading system based on that.

And European wokeness is alive and well is Scotland. Is it any wonder Western Civilization in Europe is collapsing?

What A Messy System

The elections in happened last night. What a mess.

No clear winner
Israel’s October 27 election is heading for a deadlock. With about 85% of votes counted, neither Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu nor his main rival, former military chief Gadi Eisenkot, has a path to the 61 seats needed for a majority in the 120-seat Knesset.
Projected seats so far
These are the Central Elections Committee’s projections as of Wednesday morning:
Key takeaways
Netanyahu’s bloc fell from 68 seats in the outgoing Knesset, but Likud is still the largest single party.
The Arab parties are on track for their strongest result ever.
Turnout was nearly 78%, the highest since 1999.
Exit polls first had the opposition slightly ahead, then shifted to a tie or a small Netanyahu lead.
What’s next
Hundreds of thousands of absentee ballots, including votes from soldiers and diplomats, still need to be counted, so the seat numbers could change. Official results are expected around November 4. After that, weeks of coalition talks are likely, and if no one can form a government, Israel could hold another election.

61 seats in the Knesset (out of a total of 120 seats) are needed for a majority.

Netanyahu stays in office for now as the “caretaker” Prime Minister.

You Still Need to Know Stuff

According to the California Post:

A UC Berkeley professor has stopped grading students’ homework for correctness after noticing artificial intelligence tools were helping them rack up top marks.

Richard Borcherds, a renowned mathematician who received the prestigious Fields Medal in 1998, said widespread student use of AI has undermined the value of traditional homework grading.

“Student use of AI for homework is now widespread,” Borcherds told The California Post. “Grading for correctness just adds a huge incentive for them to use AI for homework instead of doing it themselves, and penalizes students for honesty.”

Paying graders to evaluate AI generated answers is also a waste of time and money, he said.

Borcherds now awards credit based primarily on whether students complete their assignments rather than whether their answers are correct, acknowledging that he does not know of a better solution.

The professor said it has become increasingly difficult to distinguish work produced by artificial intelligence from work written by students themselves.

“There is no easy way to tell the difference between human and AI generated work,” he told The California Post. “Occasionally one could tell it is AI because AI made a few characteristic errors, but AI has now improved so much that it rarely makes obvious mistakes.”

His comments come as AI tools grow increasingly capable of tackling complex academic problems, raising questions about how universities will assess students’ work and prepare the next generation of mathematicians.

Borcherds’ concerns about the future of mathematics were also highlighted in an interview with the Daily Californian, UC Berkeley’s student newspaper.

“If AI continues to improve at present rate, then, in a few years, there’ll be nothing human mathematicians can do that AI can’t do better,” Borcherds told the paper.

The professor expressed uncertainty about whether aspiring mathematicians should still pursue the field, saying that just five years ago, mathematics appeared to offer relatively strong protection against the technological disruption now sweeping through other professions.

Craziness

According to Breitbart:

The museum in question is Glasgow’s Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum, which has removed its Egyptian mummy exhibition due to lack of “consent from the deceased individual.”

There is a sign in place of the coffin which reads, “We have removed human remains from this display as a mark of respect.”

According to the Telegraph:

The items removed include a coffin with the remains of Nekht, a priest, a mummified right hand recovered from the Valley of the Kings in Luxor, Egypt, and a mummified male head and right foot.

Scottish Tory culture spokesman Murdo Fraser said of the move, “This is woke madness at its most ridiculous.”

“Even Egyptian mummies are now being cancelled by a society so obsessed with modern sensibilities that it has lost all sense of perspective,” he said, adding, “People visit museums to learn about ancient civilizations, not to see history hidden away because it fails to meet today’s ideological standards.”

According to the Daily Mail, the woke moves do not stop there, either, as the charity Glasgow Life is “currently working to remove archaeological human remains from the History Discovery Centre and the Scotland’s Early People gallery at Kelvingrove Museum.”

“Once we have completed work at Kelvingrove Museum, work will begin to remove a coffin and mummified human remains on display in St. Mungo Museum,” it said.
