Last weekend, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau went to Kyiv, the capital of Ukraine, on the second anniversary of the Russian invasion.
While there, Trudeau pledged $3 billion in additional aid this year.
That’s a positive. The West must not lose its resolve to help Ukraine beat back the aggression of Russia’s thuggish dictator, Vladimir Putin. And while we have no real ability to help the Ukrainians militarily, we can provide lots of assistance with food security and community recovery.
I especially like the pledge to have CSIS cooperate with the Ukrainian Intelligence Service and to attach Canadians to the “counter-nuclear smuggling” efforts of the U.S. Department of Energy, to ensure Russia and its terrorist allies do not acquire material from Ukrainian nuclear plants that could be used to attack Ukrainian or Western cities.
But did you catch some of the strings the woke Trudeau government attached to Canada’s help?
In order to receive $10 million to help rebuild mental health services, Ukraine must agree to make its health system more “human rights-oriented.” Trade will be made dependent on decarbonizing Ukraine’s economy and online Ukrainian news services must employ internet fact-checkers “to counter misinformation.”
Sounds suspiciously like Liberal domestic policy — plenty of virtue signalling that will have little practical effect.
But it gets better:
But my favourite is the Trudeau government’s insistence that, if the government of President Volodymyr Zelenskyy wants $4 million to help remove landmines from around its country, it must promote more “gender-inclusive demining.”
Apparently, our government believes it is a high priority — on par with turning back the Russian army — that Ukrainian bomb squads be gender balanced.
