Episode 963 – RIP to Two Great Athletes!

The sports world was rocked yesterday with the deaths of two Hall of Famers.

Israel prepares for an attack by Iran. I’m not sure they have much to worry about.

And the NCAA might be getting wise about men playing in women’s sports.

Some News

Here is some news:

  • The dock workers are not on strike. The International Longshoremen’s Association (ILA), which represents 45,000 dockworkers, began its first strike since 1977 after its six-year contract with the U.S. Maritime Alliance (USMX), which represents port employers, expired Monday night.
    • The ILA has said that it will exempt cruise ships and military cargoes from the strike and will continue to handle those to prevent disruptions to travelers’ schedules as well as national security.
    • USMX reportedly made a new offer to the ILA on Monday afternoon that would’ve raised wages by nearly 50% over the new contract as well as tripling employer contributions to retirement plans, better health care and kept language about automation in the deal.
    • The Union wants a 77% raise over the next six years.
  • Israel is preparing for an attack from Iran.
  • Pete Rose has died at the age of 83.
    • He is the all time leader in hits with 4256.
    • He was banned from baseball for gambling.
  • Dikembe Mutombo, a Basketball Hall of Famer known for his finger wag after blocking a shot during his career, has died, the NBA announced Monday. He was 58.
  • Former Democrat President Jimmy Carter turns 100 years old on Tuesday, earning himself the distinction of being the first president to ever live for an entire century.

This Is the Way to Do It!

According to the Idaho Press:

The Boise State volleyball team has forfeited its match scheduled for Saturday against San José State after The Independent Council on Women’s Sports (ICONS) reportedly sent a letter to Mountain West Conference schools urging them to take action regarding a player on the Spartans’ roster who is reportedly transgender.

Boise State announced the decision to forfeit the match Friday afternoon, roughly 24 hours before it was set to begin.

“Boise State volleyball will not play its scheduled match at San Jose State on Saturday, Sept. 28,” the school said in the statement. “Per Mountain West Conference policy, the Conference will record the match as a forfeit and a loss for Boise State. The Broncos will next compete on Oct. 3 against Air Force.”

Boise State’s statement did not mention the player, nor the letter from ICONS. Outkick reported Thursday that ICONS, which has filed a lawsuit against the NCAA over the participation of transgender athletes in women’s sports over safety concerns, had sent a letter to the Mountain West and all of its schools.

“I applaud Boise State for working within the spirit of my Executive Order, the Defending Women’s Sports Act,” Idaho Gov. Brad Little posted on X, formerly Twitter. “We need to ensure player safety for all of our female athletes and continue the fight for fairness in women’s sports.”

More Winning!

According to Red State:

The satire site The Babylon Bee announced Wednesday that it is suing California Attorney General Rob Bonta over AB 587, a law passed in 2022 by the state legislature which, according to an email the Bee sent to supporters, “requires companies to give the California Attorney General’s Office regular reports regarding disinformation, misinformation, extremism, radicalization, and hate speech. The law allows the state to impose fines if companies do not comply with these reporting regulations.”

In other words, 587 is a completely onerous, possibly anti-constitutional attempt to control the media and dictate its narratives.

Bee CEO Seth Dillon explained on his Substack that proponents of the law are simply lying about its intent:

They’re claiming it’s just about “transparency.” That’s not true. This is a censorship bill, not a transparency bill. Here’s [California Governor] Gavin Newsom himself explaining why he signed the bill into law: “California will not stand by as social media is weaponized to spread hate and disinformation that threaten our communities and foundational values as a country.”

Newsom likes to run ads in other states claiming that “freedom is under attack,” and that California leads the nation in freedom. However, the well-coiffed executive oversees a legislature that has passed—with his blessing—two of the most anti-free speech laws in the nation, 587 and the doctor-muzzling law AB 2098.
