A trans-identified male racking up wins in girls’ sports in California has been identified as the brother of a prominent US Olympian. Jaylin Liu is the brother of gold medal-winning figure skater Alysa Liu.
Jaylin appears to have previously gone by the name “Joshua,” and appears to have begun identifying as female relatively recently. Some news articles on his sister’s Olympic successes still refer to him by his birth name, while other profiles have been quietly updated to reflect his new name.
Since the 2025 outdoor athletic season, Jaylin has been participating in girls’ sports on teams at both Albany High School and El Cerrito High School in California.
At Albany, Jaylin took eight separate first-places spots at seasonal meets and races in 2025. He seized a silver medal at the NCS Bayshore Championship in the 400-meter race, and a gold in the 2025 Tri-County Athletic League Frosh-Soph Championship 200-meter race.
This year, Jaylin has continued to outperform his female competitors, and has taken first place at every 200- and 400-meter girls race he’s participated in for Albany. This includes a first place finish at the Tri-County Athletic League Finals that were held on May 8.
He is currently ranked the best “female” runner on his team in the 200- and 400-meter race, and the best “female” runner in the Tri-County Athletic League in the quarter-mile.
In addition to participating in girls track and field, Jaylin has been active in girls varsity basketball and ultimate frisbee. He recently boasted of winning a silver medal at a basketball championship, and played for El Cerrito High School at the recent Ultimate High School National Invite, which was held from June 12-13 in Oregon.

Jaylin was one of five children born to surrogates, though he had a different egg donor than his Olympian sister Alysa. The children’s father, Arthur Liu, has said that he explicitly sought out white egg donors for his children.
Arthur was briefly married to a much older woman named Qing Xin Yan, who also goes by the name Mary. While she was the legal guardian for Arthur’s children and helped raise them when they were young, she is not biologically related to any of them.
Yan is a former high-ranking member of the Zhong Gong, a “spiritual movement” which is designated as a cult in China. Zhong Gong practitioners reject modern medical science and believe meditative practices can cure illness and give people supernatural abilities. Yan was married to the founder of the movement, Hong Bao Zhang, for 12 years. In 2003, Yan sued Zhang for $23 million, alleging he had abused her while they were married. Arthur Liu was her lawyer.

French transgender basketball player Julie Tetart wouldn’t turn down an offer to play in the WNBA amid debates on the participation of trans athletes in women’s sports.
The 34-year-old Tetart, who came out as trans in October 2021, plays in Monaco.
“If they contact me, I won’t say no. But you have to be realistic: I’m old, and there are far better players than me!” Tetart told OutKick over Instagram direct messages on Monday.
In the 2025-26 season, Tetart led France’s second-tier Ligue 2 in both scoring and rebounding — en route to Player of the Year, Defensive Player of the Year and Domestic Player of the Year accolades.
Tetart averaged 21.2 points, 20.2 rebounds and 2.0 assists per game during the 2025-26 campaign.

A Brazilian influencer has been handed a two-year prison sentence after using male pronouns to refer to a transgender politician. Bianca Barreto received her sentence from the 9th Criminal Court of Salvador on July 29, after she was found guilty of the “intentional and pejorative use of the gender opposite… [to a] self-declared identity.”
The sentence follows a lengthy case stemming from a 2024 video posted to social media by Barreto. In the video, she criticized Duda Salabert, a member of Brazil’s Chamber of Deputies. Salabert is a member of the left-wing Socialism and Liberty Party, and was one of the first openly trans-identified people to be elected to the Chamber, serving since 2022.
Barreto’s video described an earlier case involving Salabert and conservative parliamentarian Nikolas Ferreira. Ferreira, another member of the Chamber of Deputies, stood in the same election as Salabert in 2020 to be a local councillor for the city of Belo Horizonte. At the time, Salabert was the first trans-identified person to run for office to the city council.
In an interview during the campaign, Ferreira told a local newspaper that he will still refer to Salabert with male pronouns.
“He is a man. That’s what’s on his birth certificate, regardless of what he thinks,” he said, while in another interview saying he wasn’t worried about being sued by Salabert for his remarks. “It’s biology. I’m not saying something I think. He is a man. And it’s important to make it clear that there is no criminalization related to biology,” he added.
However, Salabert did file a criminal complaint against Ferreira, referencing the fact that Brazil’s Supreme Court had classified transphobia and homophobia as crimes of “social racism” since 2019. The case was later dismissed on procedural grounds, but in a separate civil action, Ferreira was forced to pay R$80,000 in 2023, equivalent to around $15,500 USD, reduced on appeal to R$30,000.
