Episode 1107 – The WNBA Can’t Get Out of Their Own Way

The WNBA can’t seem to take the opportunity to be a legitimate sports league.

Pope Leo is being wishy-washy when it comes to bad behavior.

And Great Britain is running into a little problem they haven’t had to deal with since the 6th century. Gee, I wonder what changed.

These Guys Don’t Know How to Succeed

Here is Napheesha Collier calling out WNBA commissioner Cathy Engelbert:

A Great Non-Answer

According to Perplexity:

Catholic observers and organizations have voiced significant criticism of the Vatican and Pope Leo XIV after his comments defending the plan to honor Senator Dick Durbin—who is openly pro-abortion—with a Catholic “Lifetime Achievement Award” from the Archdiocese of Chicago. The controversy arose because Durbin, a longtime Catholic senator from Illinois, has a public record of supporting abortion rights, which is directly at odds with core Catholic teachings. Several Catholic bishops, including Bishop Thomas Paprocki of Durbin’s home diocese, labeled the proposed honor as a “great scandal” and “shock[ing]” to Catholic sensibilities, arguing that it causes confusion about the Church’s unwavering stance on the sanctity of life.

I Wonder Where That Is Coming From?

According to The Telegraph:

The NHS has been urged to apologise for publishing guidance extolling the benefits of first-cousin marriage despite the increased risk of birth defects.

Guidance published last week by the NHS England’s Genomics Education Programme says first-cousin marriage is linked to “stronger extended family support systems and economic advantages”.

But the practice has also been linked to oppression of women and also has a proven increased risk of genetic disease in offspring of first-cousin relationships.

Richard Holden, the Tory MP, told the Mail On Sunday: “Our NHS should stop taking the knee to damaging and oppressive cultural practices.

“The Conservatives want to see an end to cousin marriage as a backdoor to immigration too, but Labour are deaf to these sensible demands.

“Sir Keir Starmer should stop running scared of the misogynistic community controllers and their quislings who appear in the form of cultural relativist-obsessed sociology professors, and ban a practice the overwhelming majority, from every community in Britain, want to see ended for good.”

Marrying a first cousin is legal in the UK, but it increases the risk of children inheriting genetic conditions. Health issues such as sickle cell disease and cystic fibrosis are more likely to be carried or contracted in children with parents who are closely related.

Cultures that encourage first-cousin marriage have also been accused of oppressing women and being used as a tool to suppress personal freedoms.

Dr Patrick Nash, an expert on religious law and director of the Pharos Foundation social science research group in Oxford, called the guidance “truly dismaying”.

“Cousin marriage is incest, plain and simple, and needs to be banned with the utmost urgency – there is no ‘balance’ to be struck between this cultural lifestyle choice and the severe public health implications it incurs.

“This official article is deeply misleading and should be retracted with an apology so that the public is not misled by omission and half-truths.”

The NHS guidance points out that the practice has been legal in the UK since the 1500s as a loophole for King Henry VIII to marry Catherine Howard, his ex-wife’s cousin.

According to Perplexity:

Great Britain is currently facing significant public debate and political controversy over cousin marriage, with particular focus on first-cousin unions. While these marriages remain legal in the UK, concerns about genetic risks, cultural sensitivities, and social implications have led to heated discussions and calls for policy change.

Current Legal Status and Controversy

Marrying a first cousin is not prohibited by UK law, a stance dating back to the 16th century and enshrined in the Marriage Act 1949. However, recent proposals—especially by Conservative MP Richard Holden—are pressuring for a ban, citing increased risks of genetic disorders such as thalassemia and cystic fibrosis among children born from first-cousin unions. Parliament is actively scrutinizing legislation to criminalize cousin marriages, though the ruling Labour government has stated it has “no plans” for a ban, preferring education and genetic counseling instead.

NHS Guidance and Public Backlash

The National Health Service (NHS) recently published guidance mentioning potential benefits of first-cousin marriage, such as stronger family support systems and economic advantages. This guidance was met with fierce backlash, leading to apologies and the removal of the guidance following criticism from politicians and the public, most of whom view cousin marriage negatively. Polls indicate 77% of Britons believe cousin marriage should be illegal.

Cultural Context and Health Concerns

Cousin marriage is more prevalent in some UK minority communities, especially among British Pakistanis, where it is a longstanding tradition. Opponents argue that banning cousin marriage would address health risks and social issues such as forced marriage, while proponents counter that education and voluntary screening are more effective and less discriminatory. Some geneticists stress that targeted measures, rather than blanket bans, could better address health concerns without stigmatising cultural practices.

Public Opinion and Political Debate

Recent studies and polling show strong public support for a ban across all major parties. However, the conversation includes questions of cultural autonomy, personal freedoms, and effective public health policy, making the issue deeply contentious and politically charged. Other European countries such as Norway and Sweden have recently enacted bans, increasing pressure on the UK to reconsider its laws.

In summary, Great Britain is experiencing a complex and divisive debate over cousin marriage, shaped by legal precedent, evolving social norms, medical risks, and strong public opposition.

These People Don’t Belong Here

According to the Daily Wire:

The illegal immigrant superintendent of Des Moines Public Schools in Iowa claimed to have six children with five different mothers on an immigration application, three of whom were born within a year of each other, sources told The Daily Wire.

Ian Andre Roberts of Guyana, who had a deportation order from May 2024, was arrested by Immigration and Customs Enforcement Friday, according to the agency.

Roberts previously tried to apply for immigration status after overstaying his student visa, which was issued in 1999, according to sources. The application, which listed his children and lovers, was later denied, according to sources.

Two of his children are 11 years old, while the others are 12, 18, 22 and 30, sources said, citing his immigration paperwork. The oldest child was born in Guyana, while the five others were born in the United States.

Following the arrest, ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations St. Paul Field Office Director Sam Olson questioned how Roberts was hired, given his lack of immigration status.
